Where to Shop in Downtown Asheville

Tops for Shoes

Tops for Shoes has been fitting feet on Lexington Avenue since 1952, and three generations in, it still works the way an old-school shoe store should. The staff measure your foot and bring the boxes to you. The selection spans women's and men's, casual and comfort, in sizes and widths most stores don't bother to stock. Mast General Store

Two blocks over on Biltmore Avenue, Mast General Store fills a restored 1940s building with creaking wood floors and the feel of an old country store. The candy counter alone offers more than 500 kinds, scooped by the pound from glass barrels, and it earns a stop even if you leave with nothing else. Downstairs opens into a full outdoor department: Patagonia, ENO, and the rest, handy if you left a rain layer at home before a hike.

Minx Boutique

Minx, has been a North Lexington fixture for years, and it trades in color and print. Expect great dresses, easy separates, and a jewelry case that stops you on the way out. The inventory turns over often, so what catches your eye today may be gone next week.

Embellish

Embellish occupies a corner of the historic Sinclair Building on Broadway, with a tightly edited selection of jewelry and gifts from independent designers and makers. Founder Barb Skupien recently handed the shop to new owner (and longtime employee) Jamie Bryan, who has held on to its warm, maker-focused character.

Just South of Downtown: Grounded Interiors for Home and Design

One shop here earns a short drive off the downtown grid. A few minutes south on Biltmore Avenue, with free parking out front, Grounded Interiors sells home furnishings that come with a real local story.

When the longtime home store Dwellings closed, its design and warehouse team carried the work forward under a new name. They kept what made the original special: North Carolina-made upholstery, well-chosen furniture, and the smaller pieces that finish a room, from candles to linens. A Little Farther Out: West and East Asheville

The last two sit on opposite sides of town, each a few minutes from the center. Point yourself toward whichever fits the rest of your day.

Sparky's Toys & Gifts

Sparky's Toys & Gifts anchors a stretch of Haywood Road in the heart of West Asheville, a small, family-owned shop that welcomes dogs at the door. It favors regional toymakers and craftspeople, next to classic games, books, and the gag gifts that make a kid laugh. No kids on this trip? It's an easy place to grab a birthday gift to bring home, or a puzzle to fill a slow evening at the cabin. We know the owner, and the care shows on the shelves.

Black Dome Outfitters

On the east side of town, Black Dome Outfitters has served Asheville's climbers and hikers for more than 40 years. Black Dome is relocating to the campus of Highland Brewing, joining a new climbing gym and an in-house pizza spot on the brewery's 40-acre East Asheville grounds, and bringing its Carolina Climbing Museum along.
